Let’s Knit A Hooded Jacket For A Baby

This hooded jacket for a baby is quick to knit as you use chunky wool and thick needles. It is also cozy and hardwearing, so let’s give it a go. You can also use up all your scraps and make the jacket multi-colored as seen below if you like, or do it in one color.

This jacket is suitable for babies of 3 months (6 months, 12 months, 18 months, 24 months). It can be done with or without the hood. My good friend knitted the hooded jacket pattern for her granddaughter of two years old, (seen below) and she lives in it. There are also such cute buttons available for this age group and wooden buttons also look great with this chunky knit.

Beginning Of Armholes:

Increase 3 sts on the left edge.

On obtained 24(25, 27, 28, 29) sts continue working 4 sts in garter stitch at armhole edge for the border.

Starting on WS of back work in g st for 4 cm and cast off all sts knitwise on WS.

So as you can see this hooded jacket for a baby has been knitted in one long piece, so there are no shoulder seams to sew up.

Right Sleeve:

Picking up sts along the armhole border naturally tightens the top of the sleeve. Insert a needle from left to right in each g st ridge of armhole border. 26(28, 30, 32, 34) loops were obtained onto the needle.

Work in st st and increase 1 st at each end of 1st row – 28(30,32,34,36) sts.

When the work measures 10(12, 15,17,19) cm on WS work in g st for 4 cm and decrease 4 sts evenly across the 3rd row.

Cast off the remaining 24(26, 28, 30, 32) sts knitwise on WS.

Left Sleeve:

Work as for Right Sleeve.

Hood:

Cast on 57(61, 65, 67, 69) sts and work in g st for 16.5(17, 17.5, 18, 18) cm.

Cast off.

Finishing:

Fold the hood in half and sew the back of the hood.

Sew the hood to neck edge border leaving 4 sts free at each end.

Sew up the sleeves and sides of the jacket.

Sew on the buttons.

Secure and weave in all the ends.
