Baby Cardigan Knitting Pattern

This baby cardigan knitting pattern is a wrap cardigan and is perfect for special occasions. it is relatively easy to knit and is knitted in stocking stitch.

Baby Cardigan Knitting Pattern

Size:

For Babies 3-6(6-9, 9-12) months old.

Chest – 46(52, 58) cm

Length to shoulder – 23 (27, 30,5) cm

Sleeve length 15(18, 21) cm

You Will Need:

3(3, 4) x 50 g balls of Elle 4 ply Premier Natural Cotton in a color of your choice.

A pair each of 2.25 mm and 3 mm knitting needles.

Embroidery needle to sew your jersey up.

Tension:

28 sts and 38 rows to 10 cm measured over st st using 3 mm needles.

Let’s Start:

Instructions here are given for the smallest size with the larger size in brackets ( ).

Where one set of figures is given, it applies to all sizes.

Back:

Using 2.25 mm needles c/o 70(76, 82) sts.

Next Row (RS): *k1, p1, rep from * to end. This row forms the single rib pattern.

Work 3 more rows in rib pattern.

Change to 3 mm needles and starting with a knit row, work 42(54, 64) rows in st st ending with a WS row.

Shape Armholes:

C/off 2(3, 4) sts at the beg of the next 2 rows 66(70, 74) sts.

C/off 2 sts at the beg of the next 2 rows 62(66, 70) sts.

Next Row (RS): K3, k2 tog, work to last 5 sts, k2 tog tbl, k3 60(64, 68) sts.

Next Row: P

Rep the last 2 rows 4 times more 52(56, 60) sts.

Cont in st st on these sts for a further 28(30, 34) rows without further shaping ending with a WS row.

Shape Shoulders:

Next Row (RS): c/off 7(8, 9) sts, k8 sts, turn and work to end of row.

C/off these 8 sts.

Shape the other side of the shoulder:

With RS of work facing, rejoin yarn to rem sts, c/off the next 22(24, 26) sts for center back neck, k to end of row.

Next Row (WS): c/off 7(8, 9) sts, p to end of row (8 sts).

C/off rem 8 sts.

Right Front:

Using 2.25 mm needles, c/on 70(76, 82) sts. Work 4 rows in a single rib pattern as given for the back.

Change to 3 mm needles and starting with a k row, work 26(36, 44) rows in st st ending with a WS row.

Shape front slope:

Next Row (RS): c/off 4(6, 7) sts at the beg of row, k to end 66(70, 75) sts.

Work 1 row.

C/off 3 sts at beg of next row, k to end 63(67, 72) sts.

Next Row (WS): p to last 4 sts, p2 tog, p2 62(66, 71) sts.

Next Row: K2, k2 tog, k to end of row 61(65,70) sts.

These 2 rows set the dec pattern along the front edge.

Cont dec on every row, until there are 49(51, 54) sts rem on the needles, ending with RS row.

Shape Armhole:

With the WS of work facing, cont dec at the front edge on every row as set and at the same time c/off 3 sts at the beg of the row.

Work 1 row.

C/off 2 sts at the beg of the next row.

Dec 1 st at the armhole edge on the next 5 alt rows refer to the shaping on the back so the armhole dec will match 28(29, 31) sts.

Work 1 row.

Cont working dec only along the front edge on every alt row until 15(16, 17) sts rem on the ns.

Work 4(6, 8) rows straight on these sts ending with a RS row.

Shape Shoulders:

C/off 7(8, 9) sts at the beg of next row (8 sts).

Work 1 row.

C/off rem 8 sts.

Left Front:

Using 2.25 mm ns c/on 70(76, 82) sts.

Work 4 rows in single rib patt as given for back.

Change to 3mm ns and starting with a k row, work 25(35, 43) rows in st st ending with a RS row.

Shape Front Slope:

Next row (WS): c/off 4(6, 7) sts at the beg of row, p to end 66(70, 75) sts.

Work 1 row.

C/off 3 sts at the beg of next row, p to end 63(67, 72) sts.

Next Row: K to last 4 sts, k2 tog tbl, k2 62(66, 71) sts.

Next Row: p2, p2 tog tbl, p to end of row 61(65,70) sts.

These 2 set the dec patt along the front edge.

Cont dec on every row until there are 49(51, 54) sts rem on the ns, ending with a WS row.

Shape Armholes:

Now cont armhole and shoulder shaping working as given for the right front, but reversing all the shapings.

Sleeves:

Using 2.25mm needles, work c/on picot edge as follows:

C/on row: *c/on 5 sts, c/off 2 sts, sl st from right-hand n onto left-hand n *(3 sts now on left-hand n) rep from * to * until 42(42, 45) sts are on the left-hand n.

C/on a further 0(2, 1) st 42(44, 46) sts.

Starting with a k row, work to rows in st st.

Change to 3mm ns and inc 1 st at each end of 5th row, setting the inc st 3 sts in from the edges of row 44(46, 48) sts.

Now inc as set at each end of every foll 6th row until there are 58(62, 66) sts on the ns.

Shape Top:

C/off 3 sts at the beg of next 2 rows 52(56, 60) sts.

C/off 2 sts at the beg of next 2 rows 48(52, 56) sts.

Dec 1 st at each end of the row on the next and every foll 9(11,15) alt rows (28sts).

P1 row.

C/off 3 sts at the beg of the next 4 rows (16sts).

C/off rem 16 sts.

To Make Up:

Sew in loose ends of yarn. Layout all finished pieces. Press gently with a steam iron, taking care not to flatten the rib pattern.

Join shoulder seams. Set in the sleeves, making sure the center of the sleeve head aligns with the shoulder seam.

Neck Edge:

With the right side of the work facing and using 2.25mm ns, pick up and k 8(10, 11) sts along the right front straight section, Pick up and k 54(58, 62) sts up the right front slope, pick up and k 22(24, 26) sts across the back neck sts, pick up and k 54(58, 62) sts down the left front slope and pick up and k 8(10, 11) sts along left front straight section 146(160, 172) sts.

Work c/off picot edge as follows:

Next Row (rs): c/off 3 sts, *sl st on right-hand n back onto left-hand n and use it to c/on 2 sts, c/off 5 sts, rep from * to end.

To Complete:

Join the side seams, remembering to cross the fronts over and join them through all three layers on both sides.
