Pinafore Dress Knitting Pattern For A Baby

Keep your baby girl warm and looking gorgeous in this pinafore dress knitting pattern. This pattern makes one size only and fits a baby between the age of 6 and 12 months. The finished bodice measures 15cem wide and the length from hem to the end of the bodice is approximately 35cm.

This pinafore dress knitting pattern is knitted from the bodice to the hem. This lets you finish the most intricate part of the pattern first. If you want a longer or shorter skirt you can adjust to whatever length you desire.

Pinafore Dress Knitting Pattern

You Will Need:

DK Yarns of your choice are as follows:

  • 2 x 50g balls of 100% pure wool in color A
  • 1 x 50g ball of 100% pure wool in color B
  • 1 x 50g ball of 100% pure wool in color C

1 pair of 4 mm knitting needles

2 cute buttons, for example, ones like these bears below.

Tension:

22 sts and 28 rows to 10 cm measured over st st using 4mm knitting needles.

Back And Front:

(make 2 alike)

Bodice:

Using 4 mm needles and color A cast on 31 cms.

After weaving in each stripe, don’t cut the yarn off, rather weave the yarn, not in use up the side of the bodice.

1st Row: (RS): K.

2nd Row: K

3rd Row: Join color C, k1, *sl 1 pwise, k1, rep from * to end of row.

4th Row: k1 *, *yfwd, sl 1 pwise, yb, k1 rep from * to end of row.

5th Row: Join color B, k.

6th Row: K

7th Row: Using color A, k2, *sl 1 pwise, k1 rep from * to last st, k1.

8th Row: K2, *yfwd, sl 1 pwise, yb, k1, rep from * to last st, k1.

9th Row: Using color C, k.

10th Row: K.

11th Row: Using color B, K1, *sl 1 pwise, k1, rep from * to end of row

12th Row: K1, *yfwd, sl 1 pwise, yb, k1 rep from * to end of row.

13th Row: using color A, k.

14th Row: K.

15th Row: Using color C, k2, *sl 1 pwise, k1, rep from * to last st, k1.

16th Row: K2, *yfwd, sl 1 pwise, yb, k1 rep from * to last st, k1.

17th Row: Using color B, k.

18th Row: K.

19th Row: Using color A, k1, *sl 1 pwise, k1, rep from * to end of row.

20th Row: K1, *yfwd, sl 1 pwise, yb, k1, rep from * to end of row.

21st Row: Using color C, k.

22nd Row: K.

23rd Row: Using color B, k2, *sl 1 pwise, k1, rep from * to last st, k1.

24th Row: K2, * yfwd, sl 1 pwise, yb, k1, rep from * to last st, k1.

25th Row: Using color A, kfb into the 1st and last st of patt (33 sts).

26th Row: K.

27th Row: Using color C, kfb into 1st st, * sl 1 pwise, k1, rep from * to last 2 sts, sl 1 kfb into last st (35 sts).

28th Row: K2, *yfwd, sl 1 pwise, yb, k1, rep from * to last st, k1.

29th Row: Using color B, kfb into 1st st, k to last st kfb (37sts).

30th Row: K.

31st Row: Using color A, kfb into 1st st, * sl 1 pwise, k1, rep from * to last 2 sts, sl 1, kfb into last st (39sts).

32nd Row: K2, *yfwd, sl 1 pwise, yb, k1, rep from * to last st, k1.

Cont in patt, changing color as set and at the same time inc 1 st at each end of row on the next and every foll alt row until there are 47 sts on the needles.

This completes the bodice section of the pinafore. Cut off yarns B and C and cont in yarn A.

WaistBand:

Rows 41 – 46: K.

Skirt:

47th Row: Inc Row: K1, kfb, *K2, kfb, rep from * to end (63 sts).

48th Row: P. 

Starting with a k row, work in st st for 50 rows, ending with a WS row.

99th Row (RS): Join in color C, p across the row. This will form a ridge on the RS to form the beg of g st border patt.

100th Row: K.

101st Row: Join in color B, k.

102nd Row: K.

103rd Row: Using color C, K.

104th Row: K.

105th Row: Using color A, p.

Cut off yarns B and C and cont in yarn A, starting with a k row, work 4 rows in st st.

110th Row: P.

111th Row: K.

112th Row: P.

Cast off.

To Make Up:

Sew in all the loose ends at the back of the work. 

Join the side seams of skirt from the hem to the top of the waistbank using a mattress stitch. Here is a video that explains exactly how to do mattress stitch.

Armhole Edging – Both Alike:

Using 4mm needles and color A, starting at the top of back bodice, pick up and k 21 sts down the side of the bodice to the waistband, use the textured patt to help you pick up the sts, now pick up 21 sts up the side of the front bodice from the waistband to the top edge (42 sts). Work 3 rows in g st. Cast off.

Straps:

Using 4mm needles and color A, pick up and k8 sts along the top of the back bodice at one side edge.

Work 34 rows (or to the required length) in g st.

35th Row – Buttonhole row (RS): K3, c/off 2 ts, k3.

36th Row: K3, c/on 2 sts over those c/off on preious row, k3.

Work 3 more rows in g st.

Cast off.

Work other strap on the other side of the back bodice in exactly the same way.

To Complete:

Darn in any remaing yarn at the back of the work and sew on the buttons on the front of the bodice to correspond with the buttonholes.

    My cousin sister and daughter are turning 12 months old. I think the size is just right. I am considering gifting the product first. Of course, if you make a gift, we will share this article as well. The colors and patterns are so cute and pretty, I think it would be like a toy if you put them on!
