These storage baskets are knitted in natural cotton.

How To Knit Storage Baskets

This pattern will make two storage baskets. One oblong 14 x 26 x 10 cm high and the other a small square one, 11,5 x 11,5, 5 cm high.

What Do I Need?

3 balls of natural cotton.  The basket in the picture is made from Roc Cotons Nature 100% organic cotton 50g/90m.

3.25mm knitting needles.

Tension:

24 sts x 36 rows in basket stitch pattern using 3.25 mm needles will make a 10cm square.  The baskets will be knitted on a needle size smaller than the recommended size to produce a firmer box.

How to Make The Storage Baskets:

Oblong Basket

First, make two side panels.

Using 3.25 mm needles cast on 63 sts.

Work in basket stitch pattern as follows:

Row 1 (rs): k3 *p3, k3, rep from * to end.

Row 2:  p3, *k3, p3, rep from * to end.

Row 3 and 4:  As per rows 1 and 2.

Row 5:  p3, *k3, p3, rep from * to end.

Row 6:  k3, *p3, k3, rep from * to end.

Row 7 and 8: As per rows 5 and 6.

These 8 rows form the pattern. Repeat them twice more, then work rows 1 to 7 again.

K4 rows and then cast off.

Now make two end panels.

Cast on 33 sts and work as per the pattern above for the side panels.

Now make the base.

Using 3.25 mm needles cast on 31 sts.

Begin with a p row, then work in rev st st until work measures 26cm from the beginning. Cast off.

Finishing:

With WS facing, join the side edges of the end panels and the side panels together with an invisible seam so that the seam is on the right side. With WS together, pin the base to the side and end panels, placing a corner at each side seam. Join the seams.

Square Basket

First, make 4 side panels.

Using 3.25 mm needles cast on 27 sts. Work in basket stitch pattern as follows:

Row 1 (rs):  k3, *p3, k3, rep from * to end.

Row 2:  p3, *k3, p3, rep from * to end.

Row 3 and 4:  As per rows 1 and 2.

Row 5:  p3, *k3, p3 rep from * to end.

Row 6:  k3, *p3, k3, rep from * to end.

Rows 7 and 8:  As per rows 5 and 6.

These 8 rows form the pattern. Work rows 1 to 7 again. K 4 rows and then cast off.

Now Make the Base.

Using 3.25mm needles cast on 25 sts.

Beg with a p row, work in rev st st until work measures 11,5cm from the beginning. Cast off.

Finishing:

With WS facing, join the side edges of the side panels together with an invisible seam so that the seam is on the right side. With WS together, pin the base to the side panels, placing a corner at each side seam. Join the seams.
